Trip Introduction

Upper Mustang “The forbidden Kingdom” is considered to be the remotest region of Nepal. However, this region offers us an incredible view of mountains, terrain, culture and a unique lifestyle of the people living in this area. Trek to Upper Mustang can be once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the remoteness of the area as well as the real life of the mountain people. You will see the tallest mountains, rivers, valleys, beautiful villages, herd of mules carrying lots of stuffs on their back, herders, Gompas, Canyon and what not.

A short flight from Pokhara will take you to Jomsom, the windy Apple Orchard of Nepal and further Kaghbeni which is the gateway to Upper Mustang and Lo Manthang. Upper Mustang resembles to the countryside of Tibet in many ways. The people share similar culture and language and the terrain looks similar as well. Mustang still remains as a Kingdom with a living King and Lo Manthang, its Capital. This trip could be a religious one filled with adventure and thrill. This is the region that has been less damaged by the massive earthquake in 2015 and has no risk to travel.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m/4,428ft)
Meals included: Dinner

Our airport representative will welcome you at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu upon your arrival. He/she will escort you to the respective hotel in a private vehicle. Your prior trip meeting will be scheduled on the very day at the hotel before dinner. However, our airport representative will give you a brief idea about the second day’s schedule on your way to the hotel. During this meeting we will introduce you to your leader/guide. Please do not hesitate to ask questions about your trek or anything that is related to your trip. To make you feel comfortable, we host a welcome dinner for you in a popular restaurant in the city where you can enjoy authentic Nepali meal along with cultural programs including ethnic dance and songs. Tonight will be spent at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Kathmandu: Sightseeing and trek Preparation
Total duration: 4-5 hours

After the breakfast, you will be visiting the different places in Kathmandu. There are many historic and cultural places that are of great significance in Kathmandu. You will get to see the major attractions of the city along with our professional guide and a private vehicle. The following are the major places that you will visit:

Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar square which are listed in the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site are some of the places that will be visited today. You can enjoy the age-old cultural heritage of the city. Boudhanath and Swayambhunath a sacred pilgrimage of the Buddhist and Pashupatinath the very famous Hindu temple are the attraction of today’s sightseeing program. After sightseeing, you will be meeting us at our office for a prior trek meeting. You can go for shopping in the evening at Thamel which is famous for useful tourist’s products. We will stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (820m/2689ft)
Total duration: 5-6 hours (Bus Ride)
Meals included: Breakfast

Today our guide will pick you up from the hotel and will escort you to the bus stop to catch the early morning tourist coach to Pokhara. Your journey is going to be a very pleasant one along the Trisuli River up till Muglin. You will have your breakfast and lunch on your way to Pokhara. After almost 6 hours of a pleasant road travel, you will reach Pokhara, known as valley of Lakes. Pokhara is the famous valley and probably among the most popular tourists destinations of Nepal. Once you reach Pokhara, you can spend rest of your day exploring the city or Phewa Lake. Night will be spent at a tourist standard hotel in Pokhara.

Day 04: Fly to Jomsom (2,713m/8898ft) and trek to Kaghbeni (2,810m/9,216ft)
Total duration: 30 minutes flight and 3-4 hours walk
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

Flights to Jomsom are scheduled early in the morning as the days are very windy. It takes 30 minutes to reach Jomsom. We will fly through the most amazing yet nerve ragging landscapes to reach there. Jomsom is the major city of this place. It is also popular for the apples. From here our trek begins. We will take the trail along the valley side. En route we pass through Ekal Bhatti, a village that is situated at the bank of two rivers. From here we will move towards Kaghbeni, a beautiful village for overnight stay.

Day 05: Kaghbeni to Chele (3,050m/10,004ft)
Total duration: 5-6 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

Today we will be trekking towards Chele. After taking the permits and clearing all the formalities we will begin to walk along the Kaligandaki River. The place is windy during the day. We will begin to ascend and reach Tang be Village. This village is embellished with Narrow alley ways and beautiful small whitewashed houses, barley and buckwheat fields and apple orchards. From here we will move further passing the village and cross the river to walk along the ridge to finally reach our destination Chele. We will stay overnight here.

Day 06: Chele to Syanbochen (3,475m/11,398ft)
Total duration: 6-7 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

The destination for today is set for Syanbochen. The walk is going to be a bit tough than yesterday. Today we will walk pass the two major Passes of this region namely Taklam La pass (3,624m) and Dajori La pass (3,735). These passes offers a great view of the lowland. En route we will witness the amazing view of Tilicho, Yakwa Kang, Damodar Danda and Ramchung Cave. After walking for some time we will descend to reach Samar Village. Passing this village we will reach the ridge. Upon reaching the ridge we will descendagain on the steep trail until we reach the stream. Walking further from this point we will reach Syanbochen for overnight stay.

Day 07: Syanbochen to Ghami (3,520m/11,546ft)
Total duration: 5-6 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

The destination for today is set for Ghami. After breakfast, we will start to ascend to reach Yamda La pass (3,850m) passing through beautiful hamlets, chortens. From this point, we will reach Nye Pass (4,010m) passing through the barley fields and beautiful lush of Poplar. Now we will descend to Ghami, the biggest village of Lo region. The village is surrounded by fields. We will stay overnight at Ghami.

Day 08: Ghami to Tsarang (3,620m/11,873ft)
Total duration: 5-6 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

The destination for today is Tsarang. We will begin our trek by a descending through a rough, narrow and slippery trail. We will cross the suspension bridge over the Ghami Khola before we ascend. Ascending is pleasant as we walk passing beautiful chortens and Mani walls. We will reach Tsarang la pass (3870m) after few hours of ascend. From here we will reach Tsarang Village that is located towards the east. The village is very beautiful as it is situated on the top of Charang Chu canyon with a big fotress and a red Gompa to its east. We will stay overnight at Tsarang.

Day 09: Tsarang to Lo-Manthang (3,730m/12,234ft)
Total duration: 3-4 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

The trek for today is going to be short comparatively yet full of adventure. We will begin with descend to the canyon. Before ascending we will cross the river. Ascending further takes us to Lo pass (3950m). This pass offers the amazing view of the Lo Manthang village. We will now descend to reach Lo Manthang village. Lo Manthang is a beautiful walled village. We get the closer view of Mt. Nilgiri, Mt. Tilicho, Mt. Bhrikuti and Annapurna II. We can also see Damodar Kunda (a sacred pond). Today we will stay overnight at Lo Manthang.

Day 10: Explore Lo Manthang/ Acclimatization
Total duration: 3-4 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

We will explore Lo Manthang Today. Lo Manthang is the capital city of Mustang. It lies in the remote upper part of Mustang. A beautiful walled village decorated with the beautiful Gompas. This place houses three major Gompas namely Jhampa, Thupchen and Chhoeda. These Gompas have gone through expert restoration over the past two decades. Exploring the Gompas and the village, rest of the time can be spent by visiting Tingkhar, a nearby village to Lo Manthang. We will stay overnight at Lo Manthang.

Day 11: Lo-Manthang to Drakmar (3810 m/12,500ft)
Total duration: 6-7 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

We will be trekking to Drakmar. We have the option to choose different routes while returning from Lo Manthang. We will take the trail that passes through Gyakar Village. This village has an age-old Gompa named Ghar Gompa with beautiful rock painting. This place is believed to fulfill the wish if anyone makes one. After exploring the Gompa we will trek further to reach Drakmar. This night will be spent at Drakmar.

Day 12: Drakmar to Ghiling (3,806m/12,484ft)
Total duration: 5-6 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

Our destination for today is set for Ghiling. We will have to begin early as it becomes difficult to walk during the day due to strong winds. The walk today gets difficult due to the wind. Walking for few hours on the windy trail will takes us to Ghiling. This village offers an amazing view of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. The village is small and dry. We can spend the evening by exploring the village. We will stay overnight at Ghiling.

Day 13: Ghiling to Chhuksang (3050m/10,004ft)
Total duration: 5-6 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

Today we will be trekking to Chhuksang following the same trail that lead us to Lo Manthang. We will walk pass beautiful villages enjoying the magnificent view of the towering peaks. After few hours of walk we will reach Chhuksang to stay overnight.

Day 14: Chhuksang to Jomsom (2,700/8,856ft)
Total duration: 6-7 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner

Here comes the last day of this trek. We will be trekking back to Jomsom today. Walking for few hours the trail to Lo Manthang ends and we join the Annapurna circuit trails. Walking further we will reach Kaghbeni from where our trek started few days back. We will have our lunch here and then continue to walk to Jomsom. We can spend the evening by exploring Jomsom. Tonight will be spent at Jomsom.

Day 15: Fly back to Pokhara
Total duration: 30 mins flight
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

We will fly to Pokhara from Jomsom. We will have to board the plane early in the morning as it is not possible to fly the airplanes during the day due to extreme windy condition. You will reach to Pokhara flying through the nerve ragging gorges. Upon reaching Pokhara we can spend rest of the time exploring the city. Pokhara offers beautiful places to visit including Phewa and Begnas Lake, Mahendra and bat caves, Davis fall, World Pease pagoda Situated at the top of the hill etc.

Day 16: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu
Total duration: 7-8 hrs drive
Meals included: Breakfast/Dinner

We will return to Kathmandu from Pokhara on a tourist coach. After 7-8 hours of drive we will finally reach Kathmandu from where our journey began. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will be escorted to the hotel. You can freshen up and go for shopping in the evening at Thamel which is famous for useful tourist’s products. Since today is your last day in Kathmandu, we host a farewell dinner where you can give your feedback regarding the services that we provided during the entire trip. We will stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 17: Final departure

This is the last day of your trip with us. You can extend your trip for one or two days to visit other interesting places in and out of Kathmandu which is completely optional. If not then one of our staff will escort you to the airport as per your scheduled departure. You can roam around the city and buy souvenirs’ and do shopping to take along with you if your flight is scheduled during late hours.
